Community data: Owning the data about us

Economic governance of data constitutes one of the most important and urgent policy challenges today. Data indeed appears to be a freely accessible commons in relation to whose data may be taken – without permission, much less remuneration. But what the corporations are developing are in fact ‘data enclosures’, where people and businesses can undertake their data related activities for free, leaving extremely valuable traces behind. IT for Change, as part of the Data Governance Network, has developed a new framework that seeks to conceptualise data, define rights over it and create a governance architecture system.
